People like stories. We are wired this way. Instructing a child to look both ways before crossing the street, will not have the same effect as telling them a gripping narrative about careless Joe who jumped on the road. The same counts for adults. When a good story is being told, we listen, and even remember the message much better. People respond better to visual information than just text. Again, we are wired this way. Our brain processes video much faster, so it is easier to attract and keep attention with a video compared to using just written words. It is a challenge for marketeers, however, to keep us interested!

A recent press release by Cisco stated that 79% of ALL internet traffic will be VIDEO by 2018. In 2013, this was already 66%…For those of you who have been living on another planet, Cisco is the multinational company that designs and manufactures networking devices. So this is not a wild prediction by just “anybody”. Cisco knows what they are talking about!
And just in case you are not impressed by what Cisco’s specialists have to say, let’s have a look at some YouTube statistics:
- EACH MONTH, more than 1 BILLION unique users visit YouTube.
- Over 6 BILLION hours of video are watched EACH MONTH on YouTube—that’s almost an hour for every person on Earth.
- 100 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube EVERY MINUTE.
Let it sink in for a minute… These figures are food for thought for anybody who is involved in marketing.
These reasons should set your marketing department thinking. It is not about designing brochures filled with written content anymore. Consumers don’t want to read long product descriptions. They want to watch a VIDEO! So if you are not yet focusing on the development of marketing movies for your company, product and / or brand, you are very likely missing out on a lot of business!
